Strange Fruit

Lewis Allen

Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.
[ Lyrics accessible from http://www.rare-lyrics.com ]

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

Billie Holiday was a very brave soul, to have sang this song in her time as well as anytime. unfortunatly, Her life style cut short a very talented jazz singer. I wish we could have had her a time longer.I have been looking for a music video of her, but I can't find any. I thought perhaps when she was a Canegie Hall that someone might have recorded her. Our Loss. I have a similar back round so I relate to her very much. I am 49 and White. If that makes any difference. I think not.
