Hi! Can anyone help me? I'm doing a open-mike showcase on the |''|American Popular Song|''| at my folk club. As part of the set I'm singing |''|I Get Along Without You Very Well...|''|. Anyone with info or background on the song please post here. |

There is a poignant story about the lyricist. Details can be found on the web. Briefly, Hoagy was given the lyrics as a poem by a student at Indiana University. The poem did not have an attribution. Hoagy spent much time tracking down the authoress, Jane Brown Thompson. Unfortunately, she died the day before the song was introduced!
The song later made it into a movie, |''|The Las Vegas Story.|''| It was sung by Hoagy and Jane Russell. This may be why Russell is sometimes said to be the lyricist. Not true.
The song has been sung by some of the greats. It appears on Sinatra's |''|Wee Small Hours of the Morning|''| album. For a breathless and different treatment, check out Chet Baker's (yes, the trumpet player) version done around 1955 and available on some different collections of his vocal stuff. He sort of whispers into the mic, perhaps making up for his lack of vocal chops. |
